Camp Sutton, Monroe, NC, evolved from an engineering training base that trained American soldiers, both black and white in segregated units, into a base that also trained WACs and Italian Service Units, and finally contained a large detachment of German prisoner of war. Along the way, Monroe became part of the New South.
Camp Sutton brought Yankees, Women, Northern Blacks, former Italian POWs, and German POWs to Union County and changed it and the New South forever!
Camp Sutton’s evolving history changed Union County, North Carolina, and the New South forever!
